그리스 수도 아테네에서 거행된 마라톤 대회에서 케냐의 35세 노장 선수가 2시간 16분 5초로 우승을 차지한 외에 새미 쳄웨노, 폴 칸다 등 다른 두 케냐 선수들이 2위와 3위를 차지했습니다.
또한 미국 뉴욕 마라톤 대회에서도 케냐의 폴 테르가트 선수가 골인지점을 불과 몇 미터 남겨놓은 가운데 지난 해 우승자인 남아공화국의 헨드릭 라마알라 선수를 극적으로 젖히고 우승을 차지했습니다.
2시간 4분 55초의 세계 마라톤 기록 보유자인 테르가트 선수의 이날 기록은 두 시간 9분30초이며 라마알라 선수는 1초가 뒤져 2위로 밀려났습니다.

Kenyan runner Paul Tergat has held off defending champion Hendrick Ramaala of South Africa in a final sprint to win the men's title at the New York City Marathon.
Tergat, the world record holder (2:04:55), edged ahead in the final few meters Sunday to win the 41-point-two kilometer race in two hours, nine minutes and 30 seconds. It is the ninth straight time an African runner has won the men's race.
James Saina has led a Kenyan podium sweep at the Athens Classic Marathon in Greece.
The 35-year-old Saina crossed the finish line at the Panathenian stadium Sunday in two hours,16 minutes and five seconds. That was 10 seconds ahead of compatriot Sammy Chemweno. Their countryman, Paul Kanda, finished third another 43 seconds back.
