미주 정상회담 개막 장소인 아르헨티나 마르델 플라타에서는 수 만 명의 시위자들이 운집해 부쉬대통령의 이라크 전쟁과 국제 경제 정책들에 항의하는 시위를 벌였습니다.
이 시위에는 아르헨티나의 축구 선수, 디에고 마라도나와 노벨 평화상 수상자인 아돌포 페레즈 에스퀴벨 그리고 볼리비아 대통령 후보인 에보 모랄레스도 참가했습니다. 미주 정상회의 개막 장소 부근 거리들을 가득 메운 시위 군중들은 부쉬 대통령을 독재자며 테러분자라고 부르면서 반 부쉬 구호를 외쳤습니다.
그후 시위자들은 공공연히 부쉬 대통령을 비난해 왔던 우고 차베스 베네주엘라 대통령이 연설했던 한 경기장 밖에 운집했습니다. 차베스 대통령은 연설을 통해 미주 자유무역지대를 창설하기 위한 부쉬 대통령의 제안을 망칠 것임을 다짐했습니다.
마르델 플라타 시 당국은 만일의 폭력 사태에 대배해 7천여명의 치안군 병력을 배치하고 시내 일부 지역들에 도로 방책등을 설치했습니다.

Tens of thousands of people have gathered in the Argentine city of Mar del Plata to protest President Bush's war on Iraq and international economic policies.
Argentine football (soccer) star Diego Maradona, Nobel Peace Prize winner Adolfo Perez Esquivel, and Bolivian presidential candidate Evo Morales attended the demonstrations. Crowds packing the streets near the summit waved banners and shouted slogans, calling Mr. Bush a fascist and a terrorist.
Later, the demonstrators gathered in an outdoor athletic stadium. There Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, an outspoken critic of President Bush, delivered an address in which he vowed to kill President Bush's proposal to establish a hemisphere-wide free trade zone.
The city of Mar del Plata has prepared for possible violence, deploying more than seven thousand security officers and barricading parts of the city where the summit is being held. Merchants took precautions too, boarding up their windows and in some cases shutting down for the duration of the summit.
