인도와 파키스탄 국경 마을 카쉬미르의 산악지대에서 8일 초대형 지진이 발생해 현재까지 수백여명이 사망했으며 희생자는 훨씬 늘어날 것이라고 관리들이 밝혔습니다.
진도 7.6의 이번 강진은 현지시간으로 8일 오전 9시가 조금 안돼 파키스탄의 수도 이슬라마바드에서 백 킬로미터 떨어진 지점에서 발생해 광범위한 지역에 영향을 미쳤습니다.
현재 인도와 파키스탄, 아프가니스탄에서 사망자가 발생했으며 산사태가 전체 마을을 덮치는 등의 사고가 일어난 파키스탄의 피해가 가장 심각한 것으로 보입니다. 파키스탄 대통령실 대변인은 사망자 수가 천명을 넘을 것으로 예상된다고 말했습니다.
인도 스리나가 지방의 관리들은 150명 이상의 사망자를 확인했다면서 이들 가운데는 많은 수의 현지주둔 군병사들이 포함돼 있다고 말했습니다.
이번 지진으로 이슬라마바드에서는 10층 아파트 건물이 무너졌으며 사망자 수는 아직 밝혀지지 않고 있습니다.
지금까지 카쉬미르에서 일어난 최악의 지진은 70년 전인 1935년 발생했으며, 8일의 지진에 비해 강도가 약했음에도 사망자 수가 3만명이 넘었습니다.

One of the biggest earthquakes ever felt in the mountains of Kashmir shook cities and villages across the south Asian subcontinent today (Saturday). Hundreds of deaths have been reported, and authorities say they expect the full casualty toll will be heavy.
The massive earthquake, measuring 7.6 in magnitude, hit just before 9 a.m. (local time) in an area less than 100 kilometers from Islamabad, the Pakistani capital, but it was felt across a wide area.
Fatalities were reported in India, Pakistan and Afghanistan, but it appears the worst damage was in Pakistan, where landslides triggered by the quake swallowed entire villages.
A spokesman for (Pakistani) President Pervez Musharraf says more than 1,000 deaths are expected.
Officials in Srinagar, in Indian Kashmir, say they have confirmed more than 150 deaths. Among them are a number of soldiers stationed along the truce line dividing Indian and Pakistani forces in the divided territory.
The earthquake demolished a 10-story apartment building in Islamabad. It is unclear how many died in the ruins.
Strong aftershocks shook the region throughout the day, and authorities warned that further building collapses are possible.
Records indicate the worst previous earthquake ever to hit Kashmir, 70 years ago, was slightly weaker than today's massive seismic event. The 1935 quake is believed to have killed more than 30,000 people.
