Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian has paid an unexpected visit to the United Arab Emirates, triggering anger from China.
Upon landing in Abu Dhabi Friday, Taiwan officials said they would discuss cooperation in trade, oil and tourism with local leaders.
In Beijing, the government urged the Persian Gulf nation to stop its official contacts with Taiwan. Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang was quoted by the official Xinhua news agency today (Saturday) as saying China has "expressed strong dissatisfaction" with the visit, and has "put forward a serious presentation to the UAE."
China regards Taiwan as a rogue province and discourages overseas visits by Taiwan leaders.
Mr. Chen is expected to return home Sunday from his 12-day trip to visit Latin American diplomatic allies, but may be delayed by a typhoon bearing down on the island.
