국제원자력기구, IAEA의 모하메드 엘바라데이 사무총장은 26일, 세 번째 연임 사무총장으로 취임했습니다. 엘바라데이 사무총장은 이날 오스트리아 수도 빈 소재 본부에서 열린IAEA총회로부터 만장일치로 3 차 연임승인을 받은뒤 즉시 취임선서를 했습니다.
엘바라데이 사무총장은 1997년부터 IAEA 수장직을 맡아왔으며, 미국이 연임 반대를 철회한 다음인 지난 6월, IAEA 이사회는 단독후보로 나선 그를 만장일치로 승인한바 있습니다. 미국은 전 이집트 외교관인 엘바라데이 씨가 이란의 핵 활동에 대해 너무 관대하다는 견해를 갖고 있습니다.
미국은 이란의 핵계획이 핵무기 계획을 은폐하는 것이라고 주장하고 있습니다. 이란은 미국의 비난을 부인하고 있습니다. 지난주 IAEA 이사회는 이란이 자국의 핵계획에 관한 국제적 우려를 불식시키지 못할 경우, 이를 제재가 가해질 수도 있도록 유엔 안보리에 이관할수 있다는 결의안을 채택헸습니다.

International Atomic Energy Agency chief Mohamed ElBaradei has been formally re-appointed to the post for another four-year term. Mr. ElBaradei, who has been the Director General of the U.N. agency since 1997, was unanimously approved and immediately sworn-in today (Monday) at an IAEA general conference in Vienna.
The agency's board of governors had re-nominated him for the post in June after the United States dropped its opposition to a third term for Mr. ElBaradei. The United States viewed the former Egyptian diplomat as being too soft on Iran's nuclear activities that Washington says are a cover for an atomic weapons program. Iran denies the charge.
Last week, the IAEA board adopted a resolution saying Iran could be referred to the U.N. Security Council for possible sanctions if Tehran fails to meet international concerns about its nuclear program.
