허리케인 카트리나에 대한 대응과 관련해 강력한 비판을 받아 온 마이클 브라운 미국 연방 재난관리청장이 미국 멕시코 만 지역에서 벌어지는 대규모 구호 노력을 지휘하는 지위에서 해임됐습니다.
국토 안보부의 마이클 처로프 장관은 9일 워싱턴에서, 태드 앨런 해안 경비대 부사령관이 멕시코 만 지역의 연방 구호 활동을 맡을 것이라고 밝혔습니다.
처로프 장관은 브라운 청장이 루이지애나 주 바톤 루지의 연방 재난 구호 센터에서 워싱턴으로 복귀할 것이라고 말했습니다.
그동안 다수의 의회 지도자들과 루이지애나 주 최대의 신문은 허리케인 참사에 대한 연방 정부의 초기 대응을 맹렬하게 비판하면서 부쉬 대통령에게 브라운 청장의 사임을 촉구했습니다.

The embattled federal emergency management chief Michael Brown has been relieved of his duties managing the massive relief effort along the U.S. Gulf Coast.
In Washington today (Friday), Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said Coast Guard Vice Admiral Thad Allen will take charge of federal operations in the devastated region.
He said Mr. Brown will return to Washington from the federal emergency operations center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
A number of congressional leaders and Louisiana's largest newspaper (the New Orleans Times-Picayune) have fiercely criticized the federal government's initial response to the disaster and have called on President Bush to fire
Mr. Brown.
Admiral Allen is currently chief of staff of the U.S. Coast Guard, and has been overseeing rescue and recovery operations in the devastated city of New Orleans. The Coast Guard has been widely praised for its heroic efforts in the days since Katrina.
