유엔은 1일 서아프리카 지역에 퍼지고 있는 콜레라로 인해 488명이 사망하고 수만명이 앓고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
유엔 관계자들은 현재 상황이 계속 악화하고 있다면서 국제 구호단체들이 좀더 적극 나서줄 것을 당부했습니다.
이번 사태로 가장 피해가 큰 나라는 기니-바소이며, 이 곳에서는 서아프리카 지역 사망자의 절반이 발생했습니다. 이밖에 버키나 파소, 기니아, 라이베리아, 말리, 모리타니아, 니제르, 세네갈 등이 콜레라로 어려움을 겪고 있습니다.
이들 지역의 콜레라는 폭우로 화장실이 넘쳐 우물이 오염되면서 비롯됐습니다.

The United Nations says a cholera epidemic spreading across West Africa has killed 488 people and sickened tens of thousands.
U.N. officials say the outbreak is worsening and they urged international donors to give more aid to ease the crisis.
Guinea-Bissau has been hit hard by the outbreak -- accounting for roughly half the deaths across the region.
Other west African countries battling cholera are Burkina Faso, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger andSenegal.
Cholera is an intestinal infection usually spread through contaminated water or food. The outbreak wastriggered by heavy rains in the region that flooded latrines and caused wells to become contaminated.
