인도네시아의 수마트라섬에서 소아마비 발생이 보고돼 이 병이 자바섬을 넘어 다른 지역으로 확산되고 있는 것으로 알려졌습니다.
세계보건기구 WHO는, 가장 최근 발병 환자는 세 날난 여자 어린이라고 밝히면서 이 환자는 이미 마비 증상을 보이고 있다고 전했습니다. 이 어린이의 발병으로 지금까지 인도네시아에서는 총 66명의 소아마비 환자가 발생했습니다.
지난 4월 소아마비 발병이 처음 보고된 후 서부 자바와 인근 지역에서는 어린이 수백만 명이 응급 예방 접종을 맞았습니다.

A new case of polio has been diagnosed in Indonesia's Sumatra Island, indicating the sometimes debilitating disease has spread beyond the main island of Java.
The World Health Organization says the latest case involves a three-year-old girl who has already experienced the onset of paralysis. The child's positive polio diagnosis brings to 66 the number of people in Indonesia known to be afflicted with the disease.
After the first case was diagnosed in April, millions of children, mainly in West Java and two neighboring provinces (Jakarta, Banten) received emergency vaccinations.
Polio is often spread when unvaccinated people come into contact with the feces of those with the virus. Polio can attack the nervous system, in some cases causing paralysis, and even death.
