Spain's parliament has given final approval to a new law legalizing same-sex marriages. The law, sponsored by Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and his ruling Socialists, gives gay couples the same rights to marriage, inheritance, and adoption as enjoyed by heterosexual married couples.
The 350-seat Spanish parliament approved the measure by a vote of 187 to 147. Spain, a traditionally Roman Catholic country, becomes the third European nation to legalize gay marriage, joining Belgium and the Netherlands.
Canada's House of Commons approved a similar bill on gay marriage Wednesday. It is expected to win final approval from the Senate in the coming days.
