콘돌리자 라이스 미 국무장관은 중동 방문 일정중 마지막 방문국인 사우디 아라비아에서도 민주화 개혁을 촉구했습니다.
라이스 장관은 사우디 수도 리야드에서 사우디 외무장관인 사우드 알 파이잘 왕자와 20일 늦게 합동 기자회견을 갖고, 어떠한 개혁도 국민들이 갈망하는 보편적 가치와 자유가 그속에 있다는 사실이 드러나게 될 것이라면서 사우디 국민도 그점에 있어 다르지 않다고 말했습니다.
그러나 파이잘 사우디 외무장관은 민주 개혁은 외부로부터 받아들일 수 있는 것이 아니라면서, 어떠한 나라도 정치적 개혁 발전은 그 나라 국민이 판단할 몫이라고 말했습니다.
이에 앞서 라이스 장관은 이집트 카이로에 있는 아메리칸 대학교에서 연설하고 중동국가들은 더 이상 민주주의를 피하는 구실을 찾을수 없을 것이라고 말했습니다. 라이스 국무장관은 중동 순방을 마치고 22일에는 브룻셀에서 이라크 장래문제를 논의하기 위한 국제회의에 참석합니다.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has continued her call for democratic reform in the Middle East during a visit to Saudi Arabia -- the latest stop on her tour of the region.At a late Monday joint news conference with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal in Riyadh, Ms. Rice said "any reform will expose the fact that there are universal values and freedoms that people aspire to" -- adding that "the people of Saudi Arabia, are no different in that regard."
But the Saudi foreign minister stressed that reforms can not be accepted from the outside, saying that for any country "the development of its political reform is the judgment of its own people."
Earlier Monday, speaking at the American University in Cairo, Ms. Rice said Middle Eastern governments can no longer make excuses to avoid democracy.
Ms. Rice travels next to Brussels (later today/Tuesday) to participate in Wednesday's international conference on the future of Iraq.
