조지 부쉬 미국 대통령은 인권문제와 관련해 미국을 강력히 비난한 국제인권단체, 앰네스티 인터내셔널의 보고서를 어처구니 없는 것이라고 일축했습니다.
부쉬 대통령은 31일, 백악관 기자회견에서 앰네스티 인터내셔널이 지난 주에 발표한 보고서에서 쿠바 관타나모 미군 기지내 수용소를 구 소련의 강제노동 수용소, 굴라그에 비유한 것은 미국을 증오하는 수감자들의 주장을 토대로 한 것이라고 지적하면서 이같이 일축하고 미국은 전세계에 걸쳐 자유를 증진시키는 나라라고 말했습니다.
한편 부쉬 대통령은 영국과 프랑스, 독일 세 나라가 이란으로 하여금 핵무기 획득야욕을 포기하도록 설득하는 협상에서 진전이 이루어지고 있는 것으로 보인다고 말했으나 협상이 어떻게 진전되고 있는지는 밝히지 않았습니다.
부쉬 대통령은 또 이란의 국제무역기구 가입 신청을 미국이 허용한 것은 이란 핵문제에 관한 협상이 진전되도록 하기위해 취해진 적절한 결정이었다고 말했습니다. 부쉬 대통령은 그러나 이란이 핵무기 획득을 추구하고 있다고 또 다시 비난하고 이란이 농축우라늄을 보유하려는 문제에 있어서는 이란을 신뢰할 수 없다고 말했습니다.

President Bush has called an Amnesty International report that strongly criticized the United States on human rights "absurd."
At a White House news conference today (Tuesday), Mr. Bush said the United States is a country that promotes freedom around the world.
Mr. Bush says it appears progress is being made in efforts by Britain, France, and Germany to convince Iran to give up its nuclear ambitions.
Speaking at his White House news conference today (Tuesday), Mr. Bush did not specify how the negotiations have advanced.
He did say the United States made a "reasonable decision" to try and advance the talks by allowing Iran to apply for membership in the World Trade Organization.
The president again accused Iran of seeking nuclear weapons, saying Tehran can not be trusted when it comes to having enriched uranium.
