53명의 기자가 순직하고 100여 명이 투옥된 2004년은 언론인에게 특히 위험한 해였다고 국제 언론자유 감시단체 ‘국경없는 기자회’가 밝혔습니다.
프랑스 파리에 본부를 두고 있는 이 단체는, 3일 발표한 연례 언론 자유 보고서에서 지난 해 19명의 기자가 숨진 이라크는 2년 연속으로 세계에서 가장 위험한 지역이었다고 말했습니다.
국경없는 기자회는, 취재원 공개를 거부해 여러 명의 기자가 법적 문제에 직면한 미국의 언론의 자유에 대해서도 우려를 표명했습니다.
이 단체는, 제 15회 세계 언론 자유의 날을 맞아 이 보고서를 발표했습니다.
필리핀은 세계에서 언론인들에게 가장 위험한 곳 가운데 하나로 꼽혔지만 기자들의 구속과 투옥 문제는 아시아 전 지역의 큰 문제로 지적됐습니다.
현재 전 세계에 투옥돼 있는 기자는 모두 107명으로 이 가운데 거의 절반이 아시아에 있습니다. 중국은27명의 기자를 투옥해 세계 최악으로 집계됐고 버마는 군사 정권에 반대하는 기자들을 구속, 고문하고 있다고 이 보고서는 주장하고 있습니다. 또한 북한의 언론은, 정부가 허가하는 내용만 전하는 기관이라고 덧붙였습니다.

The media rights group Reporters Without Borders says 2004 was an especially dangerous year for journalists, with 53 reporters killed on the job and more than 100 others imprisoned. In its annual press freedom report, the Paris-based group said Iraq was the most dangerous place for journalists for a second year in a row, with 19 reporters killed in the country last year.
The group also raised concern over media freedom in the United States, where a number of reporters have faced legal problems for refusing to disclose confidential sources. The report, which offers a country-by-country look at challenges and threats affecting journalists, was released Tuesday to coincide with the 15th annual World Press Freedom Day.
While the Philippines are seen as the world's deadliest place for journalists, the arrest and detention of journalists is reported to be a far bigger problem in Asia as a whole. Today's report said of the 107 journalists imprisoned worldwide, nearly half are in Asia. China had the most in the world, with 27 journalists in prison. The report says Burma arrests and tortures journalists who criticize the country's military government. The report also says North Korea's press is reduced to reporting only what the government approves.
