A top United Nations human rights envoy and other experts are condemning Burma's recent sentencing of at least 86 pro-democracy activists to harsh prison terms.

In a statement today (Tuesday), Burma human rights envoy Tomas Ojea Quintana and other U.N. experts called for the retrial of the dozens of political activists who have been sentenced in recent weeks. They also called on Burma's military government to release several defense lawyers who have been thrown into jail as well.

In the statement, the experts strongly urged Burmese authorities to stop harassing and arresting individuals for peacefully exercising their internationally recognized human rights.

They also demanded that Burma hold fair and open trials for all of the detainees and stop trying activists inside prisons in courts that lack independence and impartiality.
