Leaders from the world's eight major industrial nations say they will impose targeted sanctions against those responsible for violence in Zimbabwe's election.

At their summit in Japan, Group of Eight leaders said in a statement today (Tuesday) they are greatly concerned by the events surrounding last month's election. They also said they did not accept the legitimacy of a Zimbabwean government that does not reflect the people's will.

The G-8 leaders did not specify the sanctions they plan to impose.

Earlier in the day, a top Russian diplomat (Alexander Pankin) attending the summit said Moscow is against imposing financial or other sanctions on Zimbabwe.

But on Monday, U.S. President George Bush said he was "extremely disappointed" by Zimbabwe's one-man, runoff election that saw President Robert Mugabe maintain his hold on power.
