The United Nations Children's Fund says as many as one million Burmese children may be at risk of physical and emotional illness following Cyclone Nargis.

A spokesman for UNICEF in Thailand (Shantha Bloeman) said today (Friday) that up to 40 percent of the victims of the deadly storm that hit the Irrawaddy River delta two weeks ago are children.

She says in addition to lack of food and, especially, clean water, the destruction of homes, schools and sanitation systems remain a threat to surviving children.

A spokesman for the U.N. team in Burma (Steve Marshall) has called for a bigger international effort to reach the victims.

His call comes after Burma's Prime Minister Thein Sein made a televised announcement that the initial stage of the relief effort is complete.

The country's military government continues to reject most help from foreign relief workers and has been slow to allow international relief into the country.
