Pakistan's newly-elected prime minister has freed all judges detained under emergency rule last year.

Moments after he was elected by Parliament today (Monday), Yousuf Raza Gilani ordered all deposed judges released from house arrest. Later, former Supreme Court justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry appeared on his front balcony to thank his supporters. It was his first public appearance since he was detained more than four months ago.

Chaudhry openly defied Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf's rule, sparking months of street protests last year. The newly formed coalition government has pledged to reinstate members of the judiciary deposed by Mr. Musharraf.

Also today, Prime Minister Gilani promised a resolution calling for a U.N. investigation into the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

Mr. Gilani, a former speaker of parliament, is a member of Ms. Bhutto's Pakistan Peoples Party, which won elections in February.
