Japan and China were not able to make progress during talks in Beijing today (Saturday) toward resolving their dispute over natural resources in the East China Sea.

Japanese Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura and his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi say they will keep working to resolve the issue before a planned visit to China by Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda which could come before the end of the year.

Eleven previous rounds of talks between the two countries have failed to resolve their differences.

The long-standing territorial dispute involving gas fields in the East China Sea has strained diplomatic ties between the two countries for years.

The two foreign ministers met before joining a high-level economic forum on regional and economic issues with other ministers from the two countries.

Japanese and Chinese officials at the meeting signed agreements on mutual cooperation in criminal investigations and Japanese loans to fund environmental projects in China.
