At least 41 Hindu pilgrims were killed today (Thursday) when their bus fell into a river in a hilly region of northern India.

The bus was carrying pilgrims from the Hindu religious town of Badrinath, when it fell into the Alaknanda river (tributary of the Ganges) in the Chamoli district of the mountainous state of Uttarakhand (bordering Tibet).

Officials say the driver of the bus carrying 45 passengers lost control after hitting a boulder.
