The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a resolution that recommends lifting restrictions on visits to Washington by Taiwan's president and other high ranking officials.

The non-binding resolution says that ending the ban will help benefit peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region and allow officials in the U.S. capital to directly communicate with Taiwan's leaders.

Taiwan's president, prime minister and other senior leaders are barred from official visits to Washington. However, they do make stop-overs in New York, San Francisco and other U.S. coastal cities as they transit to second countries.

The House resolution is likely to anger China, which strongly opposes any type of visits by officials from Taiwan. Taiwan and China split in 1949, but Beijing regards the self-governed island as part of its territory.
