China's state media report that some local chili products, dried vegetables and dried fruits have failed safety tests by China's national inspection agency.

On Sunday, the Xinhua news agency quoted national inspectors (from China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection, and Quarantine) as saying that 13 percent of chili products and eight percent of dried fruits and vegetables failed their tests. The report did not say whether China was exporting any of the defective products.

The inspectors tested 46 chili products from 38 firms in 12 provinces and municipalities. They said products from small companies had problems, but those from larger establishments all passed the tests. The government agency said the main safety concerns include excessive preservatives and improper labeling.

Tests on 50 types of dried vegetables and fruits from 48 companies in six provinces and municipalities also found excessive sulfur dioxide and other additives.

In recent weeks, China has responded to growing international concern about the safety of its food and drug exports.

Inspectors for the U.S., Panama and Dominican Republic have banned imports of animal feeds and toothpaste from China after finding that such products contained toxic chemicals.
