A Somali human rights group says at least 52 people have been killed in heavy fighting between Islamic insurgents and Ethiopian forces in the capital, Mogadishu.

The chairman of the Elman Human Rights Organization (Sudan Ali Ahmed) tells reporters today's (Saturday's) casualties bring the death toll to 165 since the latest round of fighting broke out Wednesday. The human rights group says it gathered its figures from interviews with hospital and humanitarian workers.

The group is calling on both sides to stop fighting immediately and without precondition.

Witnesses say the capital has been the scene of intense shelling today. They say that several people were killed when shells hit a residential area in the Bakara district.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called Friday for more world support for African Union peacekeepers in Somalia. He also asked the Security Council to consider whether U.N. troops are needed in Somalia.
