Three Mexican fishermen rescued after nine months adrift in the Pacific Ocean are back in their home country.

The men (Salvador Ordonez, Jesus Vidana Lopez and Lucio Rendon) arrived in Mexico City early today (Friday) on a flight from Los Angeles.

The Associated Press reports that the men are scheduled to fly home to their families later today (Friday).

Their arrival brings an end to an odyssey that began last October. After setting out from their home port (San Blas) on a shark fishing expedition, the men say they ran out of fuel and began drifting helplessly.

They say that two other companions died at sea. The survivors said they stayed alive by eating raw fish and birds and drinking rainwater.

A Taiwanese fishing boat rescued them two weeks ago.

The men have denied allegations that they were involved in drug-trafficking. They also have disputed speculation in the Mexican media that they resorted to cannibalism after their colleagues died.
