The leaders of Cambodia and Vietnam have agreed to speed up work on installing markers along their border under a controversial demarcation agreement. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and his Vietnamese counterpart, Phan Van Khai, issued a joint statement today (Wednesday) following the Vietnamese leader's two-day visit to Phnom Penh.

The two leaders agreed to boost trade to one billion dollars in 2006. The Cambodian prime minister also announced that Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni will visit Vietnam for three days beginning March 16th. In October, the two prime ministers signed a border demarcation agreement in Hanoi that drew heavy criticism by Cambodian opposition leaders, who accused Hun Sen of ceding Cambodian land to Vietnam.

Hun Sen responded by jailing several political opponents for criminal defamation. They were released on bail last month following domestic and international condemnation.
