Authorities in Indian Kashmir say thousands of people in Srinagar spent Sunday night outdoors in frigid conditions after warning from mosques that another earthquake was to hit the region.

Police say the announcement shouted over loudspeakers panicked city residents who jumped out of their beds and ran into the streets.

Officials say the situation calmed down after police made their rounds assuring people that there was no official quake warning.

Srinagar -- the summer capital of Indian Kashmir -- is home to more than one million people.

Meanwhile, Indian army troops are leading rescue and relief efforts in areas of Indian Kashmir devastated by Saturday's quake. Worst hit were the towns of Uri and Tangdar, where officials say the army has distributed thousands of tents and tons of emergency rations and medical supplies.
