Exit polls and early returns indicate Polish voters ousted the nation's scandal-prone government of ex-communists in parliamentary elections Sunday.

The election returns to power supporters of the Solidarity trade union movement that toppled communism in 1989 and 1990. The state electoral commission said today (Monday) that with 60 percent of votes counted, the conservative Law and Justice Party had nearly 27 percent of the vote, while the free-market Civic Platform had just over 24 percent.

The ruling Democratic Left Alliance was far behind with about 11 percent of the vote. The two center-right parties have said they will form a coalition to root out corruption and reduce an unemployment rate of nearly 18 percent -- highest in the European Union. Presidential elections in Poland will be held in two weeks.
