Australians are angered by today's (Wednesday's) decision by Indonesia to reduce the jail sentence of a militant Muslim cleric convicted for playing a role in the deadly 2002 bombings on Bali island.

Abu Bakar Bashir was convicted back in March on conspiracy charges and sentenced to 30-months in jail in connection with the attack, which killed 202 people, including 88 Australians.

His sentence was cut by four-and-a-half months as part of Indonesia's Independence Day celebrations.

Brian Deegan, whose son Josh was killed in the attack, describes the reduction as "obnoxious, repulsive" and a "disgrace." A member of a Sydney rugby club which lost six members in Bali says the decision belittles the lives of the victims.

Nineteen other men convicted in the bombings also had their sentences reduced.
