Indian officials say more than 400 people are feared dead in western Maharashtra state where torrential rains have triggered floods, landslides and building collapses.

Officials say rescue teams are searching for survivors buried under debris in low lying villages.

More than 80 people were killed in the state capital Mumbai, also known as Bombay, which has been paralyzed since Tuesday.

Aerial pictures showed parts of the city under waist-deep water, with trucks and cars stranded on main streets.

The torrential rains eased today (Thursday), and rescue teams rushed emergency supplies to thousands of marooned villagers.

India's army, navy and the air force are helping in the operation.

Weather officials say Bombay received a record breaking 944 millimeters of rainfall in a 24-hour period.
