China says it plans to send women into space no later than 2010.

The Deputy Chief Commander of China's manned space program, Hu Shixiang, told the state-owned China Daily newspaper that 30 women have already been chosen for evaluation.

A selection process, slated to begin next year, will trim that number to four. While the country's first group of male astronauts were all former pilots, Mr. Hu said China will focus on selecting women with strong backgrounds in science and engineering.

China put its first astronaut into orbit in 2003, and plans to launch two more on an orbit mission this October.
