A new poll finds that nearly a quarter of west Germans want the Berlin Wall back, 15 years after the fall of the Cold War barrier that divided the country.

The poll, published today (Saturday) in the Berliner Morgenpost newspaper, indicates only half as many -- 12 percent -- of the easterners polled want the barrier returned.

Germany has spent billions of dollars to replace the crumbling infrastructure in the former Communist country, but that region has still not caught up with the west.

Nearly half the easterners polled said the west treats the east like a colony, while more than half the westerners said east Germans tend to pity themselves.
