Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon says the lesson learned by the Nazi Holocaust is that Jewish people must rely only on themselves to protect their safety.

Mr. Sharon spoke Wednesday at a special session of the Israeli parliament marking the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp by Allied forces. He said allied countries did nothing to stop the mass killings of Jews by Nazis.

On Tuesday, German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder expressed shame for the millions of people murdered by the Nazis during World War Two.

French President Jacques Chirac inaugurated a new Holocaust memorial in Paris, and said there is no place for anti-Semitism in France.

World leaders will gather at the Auschwitz camp site in Poland Thursday to pay tribute to those killed there, including more than one million Jews.
