Afghan officials say the United States has released about 80 Afghan detainees held in custody at a U.S. base in the South Asian country.

Authorities said today (Sunday) the prisoners would be allowed to return to their homes after a bus ride to Kabul from Bagram Air Base -- the main U.S. base in Afghanistan. It is not clear if the detainees were all held at that base.

A U.S. Central Command spokesman would neither confirm nor deny the release of any prisoners.

U.S. and allied forces captured thousands of suspected Taleban and al-Qaida members in Afghanistan since 2001 when coalition forces ousted the Taleban regime.

Groups of Afghans were released from U.S. custody on several occasions last year at the request of the Afghan government.
