북한 외무성은 최근 북한이 핵무기를 보유했고, 6자회담 참가 또한 무기한 중단할 것이라고 밝혔습니다.

콘돌리자 라이스 미 국무방관은 최근 아시아 순방중 미국은 그동안 자체 입장을 분명히 해 왔다고 말했습니다.
라이스 장관은 미국이 북한을 공격하거나 침공할 의도가 전혀 없다는 것을 거듭 천명해 왔으며 6자 회담의 다른 참가국들과 함께 미국은 북한의 핵계획을 포기하는 조건으로 북한에 대해 다자간 안보 보장을 제공할 용의가 있다고 말했습니다. 또한 미국은 북한의 에너지 수요를 조사할 것을 제의했고 북한은 이 모든 것을 잘 알고 있다고 라이스 장관은 덧붙였습니다.
라이스 장관은 미국은 북한 공산 정권의 억압적인 특성이나 핵무기 추구로 인한 위험을 결코 간과하지 않을 것이라고 말했습니다.
미국과 다른 민주 국가들은 북한 주민들의 곤경과 북한 정권의 속성, 평화로운 이웃나라의 무고한 시민들에 대한 북한 정권의 납치 행위, 그리고 핵무장한 북한이 전 세계에 가하고 있는 위협에 대해 결코 침묵하지 않을 것이라고 라이스 장관은 말했습니다.
라이스 국무장관은 북한이 6자회담에 복귀하지 않을 경우 한반도의 비핵화는 달성되기가 더욱 어려울 것이기 때문에 미국은 다른 선택 방안을 모색할 수 밖에 없을 것이라고 강조했습니다.

The North Korean Foreign Ministry recently stated that North Korea had manufactured nuclear weapons and was indefinitely suspending its participation in the six-party talks. The United States and other nations are deeply concerned about North Korea's nuclear ambitions. The six-party talks have included China, Japan, North Korea, Russia, South Korea, and the United States, and been aimed at ending North Korea's nuclear weapons program.
During her trip to Asia, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said that the U.S. has made its position clear.
"We have said repeatedly that we have no intention of attacking or invading North Korea. With others in the six-party talks, we are prepared to offer multilateral security assurances to North Korea in the context of ending its nuclear program. We have offered to examine North Korea's energy needs. North Korea knows all of this."
Ms. Rice says the United States will not ignore the repressive nature of North Korea's Communist regime or the danger its pursuit of nuclear weapons poses.
"The United States and other democratic societies will not be silent about the plight of the North Korean people, about the nature of the North Korean regime, about that regime's abduction of innocent civilians of peaceful neighboring countries, and about the threat that a nuclear-armed North Korea poses to the entire region."
Secretary of State Rice says that "to the degree that a nuclear-free Korean peninsula gets more difficult to achieve" if North Korea does not return to the six-party talks, the United States will have to "look at other options."
