Chinese President Hu Jintao has urged world powers to show flexibility and push
for a peaceful settlement of the Iranian nuclear standoff.
China's
official Xinhua news agency quoted Mr. Hu as saying there is a rare opportunity
for a resumption of Iranian nuclear talks. He said he hopes all parties can
seize the opportunity.
The Chinese president met today (Saturday)
in Beijing with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who was in China's
capital attending the opening ceremony of the Beijing Paralympics.
China
is involved in talks with the other permanent members of the U.N. Security
Council -- the U.S., Britain, France and Russia -- as well as Germany, to urge
Iran to end its uranium enrichment activities.
Western nations accuse
Iran of working to produce nuclear weapons. Tehran says its atomic program is
peaceful.
