미국 의회가 지난 해말 이란에 대한 주요 비밀 작전 계획을 강화하기 위한 부시 대통령의 예산 요청을 승인했다고 미국의 시사주간지 '뉴요커'가 보도했습니다.
뉴요커는 부시 대통령이 이란의 종교적인 지도부를 동요시키기 위한 작전을 위해 4억 달러 규모의 예산을 요청했다고 전했습니다.
이 잡지는 익명의 정보, 의회, 군사 소식통을 인용해 의회가 승인한 비밀 행동들에는 소수민족과 반체제 단체들에 대한 지원 뿐만 아니라 핵무기 개발로 의심되는 이란의 핵개발 계획에 관한 정보 수집 등이 포함된다고 보도했습니다.
한편 이라크 주재 라이언 크로커 미국 대사는 CNN 방송에게 이같은 보도를 읽어보진 않았다고 밝히고 미군 병력이 이라크로부터 이란으로 진입해 공격할 것이라는 주장들을 일축했습니다.
뉴요커는 일부 의회 지도자들이 중앙정보국과 연합특전사령부가 개입되는 이 새로운 작전 자체에 관해 강한 의문을 제기하고 있다고 덧붙였습니다.

A U.S. news report says Congress
agreed late last year to a request from President George Bush to fund a major
escalation of covert operations against Iran.
"The New Yorker" magazine says Mr. Bush asked Congress for up to 400
million dollars to try to destabilize Iran's religious leadership.
Citing unnamed intelligence, congressional and military sources, the magazine
says the approved covert activities include support for minority and dissident
groups, as well as intelligence-gathering about Iran's suspected nuclear
weapons program.
The U.S. ambassador to Iraq, Ryan Crocker, told CNN (Late Edition) he
has not read the report, but he denied allegations that U.S. forces are
entering and attacking Iran from Iraq.
"The New Yorker" says the new operations are documented in a highly
classified Presidential Finding that Mr. Bush signed.
