이라크의 과격 시아파 지도자 모크타다 알 사드르가 이라크의 수도 바그다드에서 열 계획이던 대규모 반정부 가두시위를 전격 취소했습니다.
사드르는 오늘 발표한 성명에서 자신의 지지자들이 다치기를 원치 않는다고 밝혔다고 로이터 통신이 전했습니다.
사드르는 이라크의 수도 바그다드가 5년 전 미군에 의해 점령당한 것을 기념해 이라크 인들에게 내일 가두 시위에 동참할 것으로 요구했었습니다.
사드르 측근들은 이라크 보안군이 사드르 지지자들의 바그다드 접근을 막고 있다고 주장했습니다.
한편 바그다드의 사드르 시에서 오늘도 이라크 정부군과 미군이 이끄는 연합군이 시아파 민병대와의 교전을 벌였습니다. 지난 6일 시작된 사드르 시 전투로 적어도 22명이 사망했습니다.
Radical Iraqi Shi'ite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr has called off a planned protest Wednesday in Baghdad.
Reuters quotes a statement from Sadr's office today (Tuesday) as saying he fears his supporters will be attacked. He earlier had called the march to mark Wednesday's fifth anniversary of the fall of Baghdad to U.S. forces.
Sadr aides also say Iraqi security forces are blocking Sadr supporters from reaching the capital. There was no immediate confirmation of the claim.
Iraqi government forces and U.S. troops continue to battle Shi'ite militias in the Sadr City district of Baghdad. At least 22 people have been killed there since fighting broke out Sunday.
Eleven U.S. soldiers have been killed across Iraq since Sunday.
