앞서 로버트 게이츠 국방장관은 앙카라를 방문해 이같은 미국의 입장을 압둘라 굴 터키 대통령과 레셉 타이이프 에르도간 총리에게 전달했습니다.
게이츠 장관은 또한 베치디 고눌 터키 국방장관과 현상황에 관해 논의했습니다.
게이츠 장관은 터키 관계자들이 이라크 북부지역의 쿠르드 족 반군에 대한 군사작전 종료시기를 밝히지 않았다고 말했습니다.

President Bush says Turkish troops should withdraw from northern Iraq "as quickly as possible."
Mr. Bush said today (Thursday) in Washington that the Turkish operation against Kurdish rebels in Iraq should be "limited and temporary."
U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates gave the same message to Turkish President Abdullah Gul and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara earlier in the day.
Gates said the Turkish leaders did not give a specific timetable for ending their military offensive against the PKK rebels. He said despite this, it is not in America's interest to cut off U.S. intelligence to Turkey.
The intelligence is helping Turkish forces identify rebel targets.
Iraq's government has called on Ankara to immediately withdraw its troops, saying the military incursion violates Iraqi sovereignty.
