New Zealand's prime minister is defending a state-owned telecommunications company's participation in a project to install mobile phone towers in military-ruled Burma.
In an interview on Sunday, Helen Clark argued that the project would probably aid democracy in Burma. She said additional mobile phone towers could help people there get news, photos and information out to the world.
State-owned Kordia has an 80-thousand dollar contract with a Thai company to install the equipment in Burma.
Opposition lawmakers and Burmese rights groups in New Zealand argue that the project will help Burma's military-led government to continue to oppress the public.
Opponents of the plan argue that at the least, the company needs to raise concerns over human rights conditions in Burma with the government directly.
