군부의 급격한 시청료 인상은 이 날 주민들이 시청 계약을 갱신하면서 알려졌습니다. 주민들에 따르면 연간 시청료는 5달러에서 8백달러 가까이 인상됐습니다.
버마 우편통신국 관계자들은 이같은 인상을 확인했으나, 인상 이유에 대해서는 밝히지 않았습니다. 위성 방송 수신 세대는 이달 말까지 연간 시청료를 내지 않으면 벌금을 내게 됩니다.
외국 방송과 반체제 방송은 지난해 군부의 유혈 시위 진압 사태 당시 버마 국민들의 주요 정보 제공처였습니다.
Burma's military government has unexpectedly raised the annual fee for television satellite dishes in an apparent attempt to block public access to outside broadcasts.
The massive price hike was discovered when residents went to renew their licenses today (Wednesday). They were told the annual fee had increased from about five dollars to nearly 800 dollars.
Officials at Burma's Post and Telecom offices confirmed the increase, but did not comment on why it was made.
Satellite dish owners have until the end of January to pay the new fee or face fines.
Foreign news channels and dissident broadcasts were a main source of information for people in Burma during last year's bloody crackdown on pro-democracy and anti-government protests.
