일본을 방문중인 중국의 차오 국방부장은 30일 도쿄에서 일본 국회의원들과 군 관료들에 행한 연설에서 중국의 군사정책은 자위에 근거한 것이라고 강조했습니다.
이보다 앞서 고무라 마사히코 일본 방위상은 중국의 증대되고 있는 군비현황에 관해 더 많은 정보를 공개할 것을 중국에 촉구했습니다.
이에 대해 일본 관리들은 차오 장관이 중국은 증액된 군사비의 대부분을 세계화 추세에 맞춰 임금 인상과 군복, 그리고 장비 현대화에 사용했다고 설명했다고 말했습니다.
이보다 앞서 중국은 올해초 군사비 예산을 거의 18%가 늘어난 4백5십억 달러로 증가한다고 발표한 바 있습니다. 하지만 분석가들은 중국의 실제 군사 예산은 이보다 훨씬 클 것으로 진단하고 있습니다.

China's defense minister is dismissing concerns about his country's massive military buildup, saying worries that China is a threat are "totally groundless."
During a speech to Japanese military officials and lawmakers today (Thursday) in Tokyo, Cao Gangchuan stressed that his country's military policy is based on self-defense.
Japan's Defense Minister Masahiko Komura urged China to disclose more information about its growing military budget during an earlier meeting today.
Japanese officials said Cao told them that China spends much of its military budget on salaries, uniforms and the modernization of equipment in line with global trends.
China announced plans earlier this year to increase military spending by nearly 18 percent to about 45 billion dollars. Analysts believe the actual budget is much bigger.
