유엔 산하 국제원자력기구(IAEA) 조사단이 지난달 지진으로 피해를 입은 일본내 세계최대 원자력발전소의 피해 여부를 조사하고 있습니다.
IAEA 조사단은 오늘(6일) 니가타현의 가시와자키 가리와 발전소에 대한 조사에 착수했습니다. IAEA 조사단은 나흘동안 현장 조사를 실시한 뒤 10일 일본관리들과 지역 핵 전문가들을 만나 조사 결과에 대해 논의할 예정입니다.
가시와자키 가리와 원자력발전소에서는 지난달 진도 6.8의 강진이 발생한 이후 소량의 방사선이 누출됐었습니다.
일본전력은 방사능 누출이 국민의 건강이나 환경에 어떤 위협도 주지 않을 것이라고 확인했지만 일각에서는 일본전력이 방사능 누출 규모를 축소은폐했다고 비난하고 있습니다. 일본정부는 방사능 누출에 대한 국민의 우려에 따라 현장조사를 위해IAEA 조사단을 초청했습니다.

An International Atomic Energy Agency team started scouring the (Kashiwazaki-Kariwa) plant in Niigata prefecture today (Monday). The team will return to Tokyo Friday to share their findings with Japanese officials and local nuclear experts.
The plant leaked what has been described as a small amount of radiation after a six-point-eight magnitude earthquake shook the area in July.
The plant's operator, the Tokyo Electric Power Company, assured the public the radiation was not a health or environmental threat, but the company has been criticized for under-reporting the extent of the leak.
Japan invited the U.N. inspectors following public concerns about the threat of nuclear
contamination.
