지난 5월에 실시된 필리핀 상원의원 중간선거에서 글로리아 아로요 대통령에 반대하는 야당들이 압승한 것으로 밝혀졌습니다.
선거위원회는 6일 모두 12명의 상원의원을 뽑는 이번 선거의 당선자로 우선 개표 지연과 부정시비가 일고 있는 2개 지역 당선자를 제외한 10명을 확정 발표했습니다.
10명의 당선자 가운데 6명은 야당이 차지했고, 2명은 무소속에, 그리고 나머지 2명은 아로요를 지지하는 후보에게 돌아갔습니다.
이번 상원의원 중간선거에서 당선된 저명한 야당 인사로는 여러 차례 쿠데타 음모혐의로 기소를 둘러싼 싸움 중에 보석으로 풀려난 그레고리오 호나손 씨와 로렌 레가르다 씨, 프란시스 에스쿠데로 씨등이 있습니다.
현재 야당의 상원 의석은 24석 가운데 5석을 확보하고 있는데, 이번 선거의 승리로 적어도 11석으로 늘어나게 됩니다.

Rivals of Philippine President Gloria Arroyo have won enough seats in last month's mid-term elections to play a major role in the country's Senate.
Election officials today (Wednesday) formally announced the winners for 10 of the 12 Senate seats being contested in the election. Six of those 10 seats went to members of the opposition, two went to independents, and two went to supporters of Mrs. Arroyo.
Prominent opposition figures who won Senate seats include Gregorio Honason -- who is out on bail while battling charges for involvement in several coup plots -- Loren Legarda and Francis Escudero.
The opposition already had five seats in the 24-member Senate. With today's (Wednesday's) announcement, it will have at least 11.
Two other Senate seats are still not determined because of voting delays and irregularities.
