중국의 군사력 증강에 관한 미국 국방부 연례 보고서에 대해 중국 외교부가 강력히 비판하고 나섰습니다.
중국 외교부의 장위 대변인은 28일 성명을 통해 미 국방부 보고서는 중국의 군사위협을 선전하기 위해 국방비용을 부풀렸다고 말했습니다. 장 대변인은 중국은 평화를 사랑하는 국가로서 국가안보를 보호할 권리를 행사하고 있을 뿐이라고 말했습니다.
그는 또 미국 정부가 타이완의 친독립 세력들에게 ‘잘못된 신호’를 그만 보낼 것을 촉구했습니다. 미 국방부는 지난 25일 보고서를 통해 중국은 군사력 증강에도 불구하고 타이완을 성공적으로 공격하기에는 역부족이라고 전했습니다. 타이완과 중국은 지난 1949년 내전 이후 분리됐지만 중국은 타이완에 대한 주권을 주장하고 있습니다.

China's Foreign Ministry has reacted forcefully to a U.S. Defense Department report on the expansion of China's military.
Ministry spokesman Jiang Yu said in a statement today (Monday) that the Pentagon's annual report exaggerates China's defense spending in an effort to play up China's military threat. She said China is a peace-loving country pursuing its right to protect its national security.
Jiang also called on Washington to stop sending what she called "wrong signals" to pro-independence forces on the self-governing island of Taiwan.
Taiwan severed ties with mainland China following a a 1949 civil war, but Beijing considers the island a renegade province.
The U.S. Defense Department report issued Friday says, despite China's military buildup, it lacks the power for a successful attack against Taiwan.
