Local Pakistani officials and residents say more than 100 people have been killed in three days of fighting in the northwestern tribal region of Waziristan.
Clashes between Uzbek militants and local tribesmen erupted on Monday near Wana, the main town in South Waziristan, near the border with Afghanistan. Most of the dead are said to be Uzbek militants linked to the al-Qaida terrorist network.
Violence continued today (Wednesday) with an exchange of mortar fire between the tribesman, who support the Pakistani government's efforts to clear the area of extremists and Uzbek fighters.
Pakistan military officials say their troops have not been involved in the fighting.
Waziristan is a stronghold for pro-Taleban foreign militants, including Uzbeks, Chechens and Arabs, who fled to the remote Pakistani region after U.S.-led forces ousted the Taleban from Afghanistan in 2001.
