매년 3월 8일은 자유와 정의 그리고 평등의 대의를 진전시키는데 있어 여성들의 많은 공헌에 경의를 표하는 국제 여성의 날로 지켜지고 있습니다. 미국 국무부는 올해 ‘용기있는 여성상 ‘수상자로 전세계 10명의 여성들을 선정했습니다. 이들 여성들은 각기 출신국 사회를 전환시키고 또한 국제사회의 훌륭한 귀감으로 기여했습니다.
이들 수상자의 한사람인 ‘제니퍼 윌리암즈’씨는 ‘짐바베 여성궐기’라는 뜻의 약칭 WOZA를 창설했습니다. WOZA가 일년에 두차례 개최하는 시위행진은 인종과 경제적 배경을 초월해 평화와 발전 그리고 시민사회 공간을 보존하는데 있어 모든 여성들을 단합시켰습니다. 이런 시위 행진들은 흔히 당국의 집단 체포로 끝나고는 있지만 여성들의 결의는 변하지 않고 있습니다.
그런가 하면 인도네시아의 회교주립대학교에서 회교사상 연구로 박사학위를 취득한 ‘싯 티 무스 다 물리아’여사는 저명한 회교 여권운동가로, 회교성전에 관한 전문지식을 이용해 미성년자 결혼의 금지와 서로 다른 종교간 결혼의 허용을 권고하고 있습니다.
라트비아언론인, ‘일쎄 요우 날크 스네’씨는 취재 보도 활동분야에서 용기를 보인 공적을 인정받았습니다. ‘요우 날크스네’씨는 투표 매수행위를 폭로해 결국 저명한 정치인들이 검찰에 기소당했습니다. ‘요우 날크 스’씨는 당국의 협박에 맞서 정부를 법원에 고발했고 명예훼손죄로 소송을 제기해 결국 라트비아에서는 그런 종류의 재판결과 최초로 승소판결을 받아냈습니다.
사우디 아라비아의 산부의과의사, ‘싸미아 알무디’박사는 지난해 자신의 유방암을 스스로 진단했습니다. 알무디 박사는 사우디 여성들이 심각한 질병에 걸렸을때 치료와 간호를 받아야 할 필요성에 대한 일반의 의식을 고취하기 위해 용기있는 활동을 벌였습니다.
그밖에 다른 수상자들로는, 말디브에서 의회에 선출된 단 두명 여성의원의 한사람인 ‘마리아 아메드 디디’여사와 아르헨티나에서 인신매매 재앙을 물리치기 위해 싸우고 있는 ‘쑤잔나 트리마코 드 베론’여사가 있습니다. 또 아프가니스탄의 ‘메어리 아크라미’씨와 ‘아지자 씨디퀴’여사 그리고 이라크의 두명 여성들도 미국 국무부로 부터 용기있는 여성상을 수상했습니다.
콘돌리자 라이스 미국 국무장관은 용기있는 여성들은 자유와 인간의 존엄성을 위해 분연히 궐기하고 있고 미국은 이들과 함께 한다고 말했습니다. 라이스 장관은 여성들의 권리와 인간 자유의 진보는 서로 뗄레야 뗄수 없는 불가분의 관계임을 우리 모두는 망각하지 말아야 한다고 강조했습니다.

March 8th is International Women's Day -- a day to honor the contributions of women in advancing the cause of freedom, justice, and equality. Ten women from around the world have been selected by the U.S. State Department to receive the Women of Courage Awards. These women have transformed their societies and serve as an inspiration to the international community.
One of the award recipients is Jennifer Williams - a founder of WOZA, Women of Zimbabwe Arise. WOZA's twice yearly marches united women of all races and economic backgrounds for peace and development, and to preserve space for civil society. Although these marches have resulted in mass arrests by authorities, the women remain undeterred.
Dr. Siti Musdah Mulia [Sit-tee Moos-dah MOO-lee-ah] earned her Ph.D. in Islamic thought from the State Islamic University in Indonesia. A prominent Muslim feminist, she has used her knowledge of the Quran to recommend banning child marriage, and allowing interfaith marriage.
Latvian journalist Ilze Jaunalksne [Ihl-se Yow-nahlk-sneh] is being honored for her courageous reporting. She exposed a vote-buying scandal that led to the indictment of several powerful political figures. In the face of harassment, she took the government to court and sued for defamation of character and won, the first case of its kind in Latvia.
Dr. Samia Al-Amoudi, [Sah-MEE-ah Ahl-MOO-dee] an obstetrician gynecologist in Saudi Arabia, diagnosed her own breast cancer last year. She has bravely fought to raise public awareness about the need for Saudi women to get access to care and treatment for serious illnesses.
Other award recipients include Mariya Ahmed Didi, one of two women elected to parliament in the Maldives and Susana Trimarco de Veron [veh-ROHN] in Argentina who is fighting the scourge of human trafficking. Mary Akrami [ah-KRAH-mee] and Aziza Siddiqui [Ah-ZEE-zah Sid-EE-kee] from Afghanistan and two women from Iraq are also receiving awards.
"Women of courage," said Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, "are standing up for freedom and human dignity, and the United States with them. We must not forget," she said, "that the advance of women's rights and the advance of human liberty go hand in hand."
