한국은 미국과의 자유무역협정-FTA 협상에서 두 개 주요 분과의 협상을 중단함에 따라 양국 간의 FTA 협상이 난관에 봉착했습니다.
미국측 수석대표인 웬디 커틀러 무역대표부 부대표는 한국이 반 덤핑 제도 개선방안과 의약품 교역 분과의 협상을 중단했다고 밝혔습니다.
커틀러 수석대표는 한국이 “받아들이든지 아니면 관두라”는 식의 제안을 해옴으로써 타협의 여지가 없게 됐다고 말했습니다.
그러나 커틀러 수석대표는 내년초 까지 FTA 협상이 타결될 수 있을 것이란 희망을 아직 버리지않고 있다고 말했습니다.
한편 미국정부 관리들은 한국이 또다시 미국산 쇠고기 선적물량을 검역에서 불합격시키고 반송한데 대해 매우 실망했다고 말했습니다.
커틀러 대표는 쇠고기 문제는 FTA 협상에 엄격히 연결된 것은 아니지만 미국 의원들은 한국정부가 쇠고기 시장을 다시 개방해야만 무역협정을 승인할 것이라고 말했습니다.

Trade talks between the United States and South Korea have hit an impasse with South Korea suspending efforts to reach a free trade deal in two critical areas.
The assistant U.S. trade representative, Wendy Cutler, said the South Koreans have stopped negotiations on anti-dumping measures and pharmaceutical trade.
She said South Korea offered "take-it-or-leave-it proposals" that left no room for compromise.
However, she said she is still hopeful for a free trade deal by early next year. Meanwhile, U.S. officials say they are very disappointed over South Korea's latest rejection of a cargo of U.S. beef.
Carter said that while the beef issue is not strictly linked to the free trade talks, she said U.S. lawmakers want to see a reopening of the Korean beef market before approving any trade agreement.
