Sri Lankan officials and Tamil Tiger rebels have reported no breakthrough in peace talks in Geneva today (Sunday), as military officials reported more violence in the divided island-nation.
The two sides are trying to salvage a 2002 ceasefire, but talks on Sunday made little progress. Rebel negotiators criticized the government for refusing to re-open a major highway to the war-torn northern Jaffna peninsula.
Government negotiators accuse the rebels of focusing too much on the highway and insist a sea route is better for delivering badly needed food aid to residents.
While the negotiators met, the Sri Lankan military said a Tamil Tiger rebel killed himself and five bystanders when a bomb he was carrying accidentally exploded.
