목격자들은 일부 지역에서 투표소들이 늦게 문을 열었지만, 전체적으로는 대부분의 지역에서 투표가 평화롭게 진행됐다고 말했습니다.
다만, 투표 거부를 촉구했던 한 야당 지도자의 근거지인 남부의 음부지-마이 마을만은 예외였습니다. 이 곳에서 주민들은 투표소와 투표 용지를 실어 나르던 트럭에 불을 질렀습니다.
콩고 민주공화국에는 치안을 제공하기 위해 만7천명의 유엔 평화유지군과 천 명의 유럽 군인들이 주둔하고 있습니다.
이번 선거는 수 십년 동안 내전과 쿠테타, 독재에 시달린 나라가 민주적 평화의 새로운 단계로 나아갈 수 있도록 하기 위한 것으로, 조셉 카빌라 현 대통령은 30여 명의 다른 후보들의 도전을 받았고, 500명의 국회의원을 뽑는 선거에는 9천7백명 이상의 사람들이 입후보했습니다.
대통령선거 최종 투표 결과는 약 3주 안에 그리고 국회의원 선거 결과는 그보다 더 일찍 나올 것으로 예상됩니다.

Vote-counting has begun in the Democratic Republic of Congo following the country's first multi-party elections in more than 40 years.
Witnesses report strong turnout in many areas and a generally peaceful voting atmosphere. The exception appeared to be in the southern Kasai provinces where officials say 11 polling stations were burned.
The area is a stronghold of an opposition leader (Etienne Tshisekedi) who called for a boycott of the vote.
The vote aims to move the nation into a new phase of democratic peace after decades of civil wars, coups and dictatorship.
Incumbent President Joseph Kabila faces more than 30 challengers. More than 97-hundred candidates are running for 500 seats in parliament.
Final results from the presidential election are expected in about three weeks, while parliamentary results may come earlier.
