Suspected Maoist rebels in Nepal have killed 20 police and soldiers in overnight attacks before today's anniversary of King Gyanendra's seizure of absolute power. At least 143 police officers are missing.
Authorities say Maoist rebels attacked an army camp, police station and government buildings in a town about 300 kilometers west of Kathmandu.
Meanwhile, the opposition Nepali Congress party says authorities have arrested more than 600 activists to prevent planned demonstrations.
In an address today (Wednesday), King Gyanendra vowed that national elections will take place by 2007, and urged Maoist rebels to shun violence and join the political system.
Tuesday, the United States urged the monarch to return to democracy by initiating a dialogue with Nepal's political parties.
The king seized power one year ago, blaming the previous government for failing to stop a nearly decade-long Maoist insurgency.
