President Bush has confirmed and defended his decision to secretly authorize the National Security Agency to eavesdrop on suspected terrorists in the United States.
In a televised address today (Saturday), President Bush said he used his legal and constitutional power to authorize the program, which was reported by U.S. media Friday. He said members of Congress have been briefed more than a dozen times on the program, which allows federal authorities to secretly intercept international calls and E-mails to and from suspected terrorists in the United States.
Mr. Bush also criticized the unidentified officials who spoke to reporters about the program. He said revealing classified information is a crime, adding that as a result of the media reports, the nation's enemies have learned information they should not have. The U.S. leader also called on the Senate to approve a renewal of the Patriot Act before its provisions expire in two weeks. He said terrorism's threat to national security will not expire at the same time.
On Friday, a bi-partisan group of senators blocked the legislation, saying it gives the government too much access to citizens' private information. The Senate is likely to revisit the measure when it reconvenes early next year.
