Millions of Iraqis turned out today (Saturday) to vote on whether they approve the country's draft constitution. After the polls closed and the ballot counting began, election officials estimated about 61 percent of the country's 15 million registered voters went to the polls.
They said turnout exceeded 66 percent in seven of Iraq's 18 provinces -- including three heavily Sunni Arab ones (Salahuddin, Diyala and Ninevah). Only one province (al Qadisiyah) saw less than one-third of voters go to the polls.
A simple majority of voters is needed to pass the constitution. But it could fail if two-thirds of voters in at least three provinces reject it. Some sporadic violence marred the day, but there were no reports of serious attacks. The only confirmed deaths were of three Iraqi soldiers killed by a roadside bomb.
Thousands of Iraqi security forces and police, as well as U.S.-led coalition troops will continue to enforce strict security measures through Sunday. Final poll results are expected in about three days, but preliminary results could come sooner.
